Action & Adventure Editorial Review

**Editorial Review of Weekend (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]** "Weekend" by Jean-Luc Godard is an audacious cinematic exploration that confronts the issues of materialism, modernity, and human companionship through a satirical lens. With its surreal narrative structure, the film exposes the absurdities surrounding human relationships and societal norms, making it a unique study of both character and culture. Viewers are introduced to Corinne and Roland, a couple whose journey towards committing familial murder is thwarted by a chaotic traffic jam that serves as an allegory for the stagnation of contemporary existence. Godard’s directorial style shines through in this film, characterized by lengthy tracking shots that capture the essence of an entangled society, alongside disjointed yet engaging monologues that touch upon philosophical musings and political reflections. The cinematography is striking, albeit Considered dated by some, aligning with the filmmakers' intentions to critique Consumerism and societal apathy. Critically acclaimed for its structure and impactful messages, "Weekend" successfully merges comedy with tragedy, allowing audiences to engage with thought-provoking dialogue as the narrative unfold. However, its abstract storytelling may alienate viewers unfamiliar with avant-garde cinema, resulting in a polarized reception among traditional filmgoers. Godard’s portrayal of female characters is layered—expressive of both admiration and critique—which has spawned much discussion regarding gender representation in his films. Despite the duality of his sentiments towards women, "Weekend" is noted for its originality and remains a significant contribution to cinematic history, likely to invoke post-viewing reflection and varied interpretations. "Weekend" transcends simplistic classification as a political film, and it's within these complexities that its enduring impact lies. For cinephiles and those intrigued by the bizarre nature of human relationships juxtaposed with societal commentary, this Criterion Blu-ray presents an essential viewing experience that invites both admiration and critique alike. **Pros and Cons of Weekend (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]:** **
